Looking to book your DVSA theory and practical driving tests? Our step-by-step guide tells you all you need to know - with information on key documents, costs, and requirements.
Looking forward to the freedom and independence of car travel? Well, as you’ll likely know already, there are two key exams that must be passed before you can legally get behind the wheel unaccompanied: the DVSA theory test, and the DVSA practical test.
In this guide, we’ll run through how to book both of these crucial exams, and all the documents and requirements involved.
Note that you must have passed the theory test before you are permitted to take the practical driving exam.
Step 1: Check you’re eligible
To book the theory test, you must:
- Be at least 17 years old (or 16 for mopeds; max 50cc engine)
- Hold a valid UK provisional driving licence
To book the practical test, you must:
- Have passed the theory test
- Be at least 17 (or 16 for mopeds/disabled drivers)
Step 2: Book driving theory test
Where to book driving theory test
Go to the official GOV.UK website:
Book your driving theory test
What you’ll need:
- Your provisional driving licence number
- A credit or debit card to pay the fee (£23)
- Your email address for confirmation
Driving theory test - booking tips:
- Choose a test centre close to you.
- Book early—some areas have waiting times of 4–8 weeks.
Step 3: Book a practical driving test
Where to book:
Once you’ve passed your theory test, you can book the practical test here:
Cost:
- £62 (weekday test)
- £75 (evenings, weekends, or bank holidays)
What you’ll need:
- Your UK driving licence
- Your theory test pass certificate number
- The DVSA driving instructor’s ID number (if you want them to accompany you)
Step 4: Choose your test centre and time
- Pick a test centre location that’s convenient and where you've practised driving. When it comes to your driving practical test, booking a centre in a familiar area should improve your chances of passing.
- Aim to book a test in the morning when traffic is lighter. Conversely, avoid late afternoon and early evening when traffic is heavier.
- Practice driving in the area around your chosen centre.
Step 5: Need to change or cancel?
You can change or cancel your theory test online up to 3 full working days before the test without losing your fee.
If you need to cancel your practical driving test, you must give 10 days’ notice, or you will lose your fee (in most cases - see below).
What if it's a special case (bereavement, illness etc.)?
If you need to cancel your theory or practical test due to a special case, you may be able to get a refund. Special or serious cases include things like sudden bereavement, illness/injury, and family emergency.
If you find yourself in such a situation, contact the DVSA as soon as possible, at: customerservices@dvsa.gov.uk. Use the subject line: "Unavoidable short notice cancellation" - or similar - and attach any evidence (e.g. doctor’s note).
Bonus tips:
- Practice using official DVSA materials or apps.
- Check your eyesight—you’ll be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres. Test your ability to read a number plate at that distance, and if you have any issues, consider organising an eyesight test as soon as possible. And of course, if you already have glasses or contact lenses, ensure you bring them along to the test.
- Use a registered driving instructor to boost your chance of passing. Being taught by a relative or friend can lead to strained relationships. Additionally, they are not properly trained, and may pass on any bad habits they have picked up over the years. While being trained by someone you know may seem like a cheap or free option in the short run, it may ultimately mean you take longer to pass than if you were trained by a professional.
